5G is coming in 2019. With the promise of super-speed data and better coverage, mid-to-late 2019 will inaugurate next-generation networks within the UK and US.
We'll also be seeing a lot of 5G devices launch over the coming months, including many around the time of Mobile World Congress in late February.
In this feature, we'll explain the key players driving 5G, why it'll probably be coming to your next phone (or the one after that) and how it can revolutionised home broadband.
What is 5G?
5G is that the next evolution in mobile networks. In the last 20 years we've had the launch of 3G, then 4G, and now 2019 will see the launch of 5G.
With a new network comes new capabilities, and those capabilities range from broadband-like speeds on your phone, improved downloading and uploading speeds, and for IoT (Internet of Things) the ability for companies to regulate devices remotely during a far more efficient and faster way than currently possible.
By 2024 there'll be over 1.5 billion folks connected to 5G, consistent with Ericsson, a corporation that creates a number of the infrastructure which will make all this possible. That journey kicks off soon with the first 5G networks expected to go live over the summer, and most operators having a commercially available service by the end of 2019.
What are the benefits of 5G?
The biggest noticeable benefits will be speed. 5G is expected to deliver somewhere between 100-1000Mbps per second meaning you'll get home broadband-like speed wherever you are. That's getting to make an enormous difference when it involves downloading movies, large files, or playing games and for several will mean they might theoretically ditch their home broadband altogether.

5G phones are coming this year - there's no doubt about that. We've heard that several devices will be teased or launched at MWC in a couple of weeks,
